The cleft palate that Jeff was born with was just one of his early hardships; his mother and her eight children had been left homeless, often sleeping under bridges in Miami. Despite this adversity, his mother got a job nursing and taught all the kids self-sufficiency, not self-pity, while saving money for Jeff's surgeries.
